The Hampshire Parent Voice Forum was formed on 8th October 2010 by Parent Voice and parents of children with disabilities living in Hampshire. It grew out of the former Hampshire Parents and Carers Forum which had been set up and facilitated by Hampshire County Council as part of Aiming High for Disabled Children. Parent Voice currently supports the parents on the Forum with resources and time.

What is Parent Participation?
|
The purpose of parent participation is to enable parents of disabled children to get involved in service planning and decision making so that provision meets their needs and resources are not wasted.
Effective parent participation happens when parents have conversations with and work alongside professionals, in order to design, develop and improve service. The conversation benefits everyone. Working with parents helps professionals to understand what needs to happen to develop services that meet families’ needs.
Working with professionals helps parents understand the complexity involved and the challengers faced by the professionals who have to bring about that change. Working together and sharing knowledge enables parents and professionals to find solutions that work.
The three essential ingredients for successful parent participation are :
- good information
- honest consultation
- effective participation
As parent participation develops, all three elements should be present and complement each other.
