What We Do:

Advocates for Children provides voluntary Advocates for children with physical and learning disabilities aged 4 – 16 yrs old. Disabilities range from moderate to multiple and complex. Some children have life-limiting conditions.

The Charity champions the legal and human rights of children with disabilities to enjoy the same rights and freedoms as other children, and to be able to fulfil their true potential by accessing the best possible educational provision.

We also ensure that they can go to school without fear of being bullied, abused or marginalised as being ‘different’.

The charity was founded by barrister, Gloria Vessey, who has worked with children with disabilities for 10 years. The Trustees are mothers who realised from personal experience how important it is to give other mothers and fathers and their children both a public voice and real practical help. That is how Advocates for Children was born

Advocates for Children provides a range of help for parents - from basic information about educational issues, assessment issues and case review to presentations to parent groups and the empowerment of parents

Advocates guide parents through the special educational needs system, representing parents both verbally and in writing. In certain circumstances, Advocates will represent parents at Special Educational Needs Tribunals.

However, the main approach of the Charity is to engage in constructive negotiations with the Local Education Authorities at the earliest possible opportunity, so facilitating the best practical solution for the child. The charity does not give legal advice, but refers those parents who want legal representation to suitably qualified solicitors.

Advocates ensure that the clients’ views are listened to and respected by all parties, and that the best interests of the child are paramount at all times.

The Charity takes a holistic approach to each case, considering all aspects of the child’s situation, within the educational and family context. The child is always consulted and involved in what is happening at whatever level of engagement is appropriate.

A child’s right to respect and dignity are central to the work of this charity.. Every child is a unique individual.

Our watchwords are – Listen, respect, care.
